Produced by ID Africa and BHM Research & Intelligence, the report highlights NECLive’s significant contributions to the Big 4 industry sectors – music, film, fashion, comedy, (and alternative art). Its strategic focus on talent management, improved regulatory frameworks, and amplified digital streaming and distribution has culminated in an investment exceeding ₦1.3 billion over the past decade, fostering unparalleled growth within the industry.

Serving as the marketplace for the biggest minds in the industry, to convene and address challenges, NECLive has actively sought solutions for piracy, funding limitations, infrastructure deficiencies, copyright infringements, and talent development gaps. The conference’s substantial influence is evident in the industry’s current surge in potential and overall growth trajectory.

NECLive’s impact resonates across various facets: from hosting conferences, exhibitions, and mentorship programs to championing thought leadership initiatives. An impressive “87.5% of industry stakeholders attribute NECLive’s interventions to the advancement of Nigeria’s entertainment sector.”

Ayeni Adekunle Samuel, the conference’s convener, reflected on the journey and future plans, stating, “The inception of NECLive was rooted in the belief that the realm of possibilities knows no bounds; that with the right blend of education, networks, and determination, we have the power to accomplish anything we set our minds to. As we embark on the next transformative decade, be rest assured that NECLive has a renewed mission to embrace.”

Regarding funding sources, while passion propels NECLive, the report reveals that sustaining the conference year after year primarily relies on support from organizers – BHM and ID Africa, alongside notable partners like Multichoice and MTN. #NECLive9: What Happens When Afro-Pop Movement Exits the Global Music Trends?

The African creative and entertainment industry has come a long way in the last decade. Concerts are outsold, and Nigerian entertainers and Africa are winning global awards.

Speaking at NECLive9, Tee-Y Mix, one of Nigeria’s top music producers, while acknowledging the industry’s growth, pointed out the need to institutionalise the entertainment and creative industry.

Speaking on a panel session titled Global opportunities for African entertainment alongside Sam Onyemelukwe and Osi Suave, the music producer said there is need to formalise the industry.

“Afrobeat movement is happening now. I’m hoping that we will be able to sustain it. But what happens when the movement moves away from Afrobeat?”

The music producer pointed out that in the past, the most sought after music was reggae. It moved away from that.

“At some point, it was reggae. At one point, it was Latin music. Now it’s Afrobeat. What we will do when that circle rolls by, and the attention is not on us again? What we have put in place determines the growth and suitability of the industry.”

He insisted that Nigeria’s entertainment industry is way bigger than one or two persons being popular on the world stage.

“We need to support our own structure. The Nigerian creative and entertainment industry is bigger than one or two persons being popular beyond Nigeria. The industry is way bigger than that.”

Highlighting the role Nigerian entertainment industry in building its own structure, he maintained that the industry should tell its own story, celebrate itself more and then take the movement to the world stage.

“For instance, we need to get to that stage where CNN will be able to give us a time slot for the Headies.”

NECLive is an annual gathering of African entertainment and creative industry experts were to convey to share ideas and ponder how to grow the African entertainment industry.

#NECLive9: Why Entertainers Need to Use Their Art and Technology to Drive Social Change – Mr Macaroni

Debo ‘Mr Macaroni’ Adedayo has called on Nigerian creatives to use technology to drive social change particularly ahead of the 2020 general elections during his keynote speech at the ninth edition of the Nigerian Entertainment Conference (NECLive)

Mr Macaroni who rose to popularity through his online skits as well as his social and political activism, particularly for his anti-police abuse campaign, spoke at the conference which took place at Landmark Event Centre in Lagos.

The comedian and actor who has used social media and tech as a basis for the production and distribution of his skits recalled his own role in the EndSars protest and how tech helped to give it much needed attention.

He said that although the primary function of entertainment is to amuse, there is now a burden on the artiste to use his art to cause societal change.

“I am doing my part by using my art to call attention to things that need to be corrected in Nigeria. We must all do our part.”

Mr Macaroni who was nominated for the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) Best Online Social Content Creator, said while some people may not find this form of art funny, its message has already been passed.

The conference themed ‘Sustaining The African Momentum focused on the economic power for self and country, opportunities via communities of Africans in the diaspora and the social impact and development through entertainment.

#NECLive9: Local Economy Must Benefit from Growth of Our Music, Movie, and Fashion Industry – Ayeni Adekunle

Ayeni Adekunle at NECLive9

Ayeni Adekunle, the convener of the Nigerian Entertainment Conference (NECLive), has said the current growth of the entertainment industry must reflect on the local economy.

Speaking at NECLive9 which took place at Landmark Event Centre in Lagos on Friday, Adekunle said he feels a sense of fulfilment with the growth recorded so far.

He said: “What we saw at Maddison Square where Burna Boy performed is what NECLive is all about. We are getting nominated for Grammys, We have musicians and actors that are now big deals not just in Nigeria but across the globe.

“The essence of NECLive is to share ideas and collaborate as we build the industry of our dream.”

The NECLive convener said that a decade ago, this development would only have been best imagined but now, it has become more than a reality.

He said: “A decade or two ago, our artistes would not be seen headlining a show abroad or being the main face of Billboard magazine.

“The dream when we started NECLive in 2013 is being lived now. What we are witnessing today in fashion, music, art, movie industry is still in its early days. Some of those that will make it happen are here today. The growth of our music and movie and fashion must benefit the local economy.”

NECLive9 is West Africa’s biggest and longest-running entertainment conference. The conference, which started in 2013, convenes entertainment and creative industry professionals from across Africa.

#NECLive9 Holds Today as Hybrid Event. Here’s All You Need to Know

The Nigeria Entertainment Conference (NECLive), West Africa’s largest and longest-running entertainment conference, returns in-person for the first time in three years as a hybrid event.

The Nigeria Entertainment Conference (NECLive), West Africa’s largest and longest-running entertainment conference, returns in-person for the first time in three years as a hybrid event.

ID Africa, a leading communications advisory and media company, announced on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, that the ninth edition of the annual entertainment conference will be held on Friday, April 29, 2022, in Lagos, Nigeria.
As we gradually countdown to the kick off of the conference on Friday, April 29, at 9 am, here’s what to know:
What’s NECLive?

NECLive means Nigerian Entertainment Conference. It is the umbrella conference for Nigeria’s entertainment industry that continually discusses the sector’s trajectory development and shapes the discourse and practices surrounding it.
It brings together stakeholders in the entertainment industry for a full day of conversations, workshops, exhibitions and masterclasses.

When did NECLive start?

The conference was founded in 2013. Since then, it has served as a platform for discussing challenges, exchanging ideas and finding a strengthened pathway for the entertainment industry in Nigeria to thrive. In 2022, the conference will expand beyond Nigeria and address continental issues.

What was the rationale behind NECLive?

At the second edition of NECLive in 2014, the Convener, Ayeni Adekunle, said when he conceived the idea for NECLive, “what was on my mind is for us to come together and identify what we’ve done right so far, some of the things we’ve done wrong, and what we need to do to move forward.”

Who Are The Past Speakers?

Since April 2013, NECLive boasts of respected guests, speakers and panellists from various sectors of the economy. NECLive has had over 470 speakers and panellists, 70 exhibitions and brands, and 14,000 attendees.
Speakers at previous editions include Innocent ‘2Baba’ Idibia, former Minister of Information, Frank Nweke Jnr., Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Don Jazzy, Darey Art-Alade, Adesua Etomi, Kunle Afolayan, Bovi, Mercy Eke, Cobhams Asuquo, TY Bello, DJ Jimmy JATT, DJ Cuppy, Basketmouth, Bovi, M.I, Olamide, Mo Abudu, Davido, Ali Baba, Joke Silva, Mai Atafo, D’Banj, Iyin Aboyeji, and many more. For the ninth edition, NECLive9 will bring together speakers from Kenya, Rwanda, South Africa, and Nigeria to discuss how we can jointly sustain the growing momentum in Africa’s entertainment and creative industry.

Previous editions and remarkable feats

Since its inception, NECLive has had eight successful editions in Lagos. When a global pandemic gripped the world in 2020, causing an unprecedented disruption that forced the world into a lockdown, the conference was also postponed. It returned in 2021 for the eighth edition and was held virtually, streamed to participants across the globe.

At the 2015 edition of NECLive, Davido and his producer, Shizzi, demonstrated how to make a hit song. It was the first time a Nigerian music artiste would demonstrate making a song live at a public gathering. NECLive attracts over 3,000 participants at the venue and millions of viewers and audiences on various platforms – cable TV, digital viewing and online streaming.

In 2021, the NECLive TV Special, a scripted 90-minutes long production, was premiered, featuring a seven-year chronicle of the most powerful speakers and memorable moments from the NECLive stage between 2013 and 2019.
The documentary-style production and the full recording of NECLive8 are available for streaming on Nec.ng.

What should I expect at NECLive9?

The theme for NECLive9 is “Sustaining The Africa Momentum”. It will explore how African creatives and entertainers can use digital media and technology tools to build sustainable economic power for themselves, the industry, and their nations.
It will also curate conversations and discussions focused on the cross-border opportunities available to Africa’s entertainment industry through the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) when it becomes fully operational and global opportunities available within diaspora communities.
As Nigeria prepares for the 2023 general elections, NECLive9 will also delve into the role of creatives and the entertainment industry in nation-building, including how to use entertainment to drive social change on the continent.
The event will also feature live performances by entertainers from Africa and include product unveilings, brand announcements, and industry tributes.
