NECLive unveils new global platform for Africa’s creative and entertainment industry

Organisers of NECLive, West Africa’s largest annual gathering of creative industry professionals, have announced the conception and introduction of a new multi-venue, global format for the conference.

After 10 years in a single city, the conference will now hold simultaneously in other parts of Nigeria; as well as in key cities across Africa, Europe, and America. These changes, according to founder Ayeni Adekunle, are ‘a matter of necessity, given where the industry is today; and in line with the new challenges and opportunities on the horizon.’

In a message to partners and stakeholders, Ayeni explains: “When we conceived the idea for an annual conference 10 years ago, it was out of frustration. Frustration about lack of education, about piracy, about lack of platforms and access and opportunities for entertainment practitioners to monetize their talent at scale. Today, most of those problems have largely been solved. But we are now faced with even bigger problems and opportunities. And I believe that it’s time to begin the work of making sure Africa’s creators and everyone else in the value chain; as well as our societies and economies, get the maximum possible value from our contribution to, and growing participation in the global entertainment marketplace.”

From 2024, the new NECLive will hold over the course of a month, from April to May every year, beginning with a flagship event in Lagos, and running through cities like Abuja, Port Harcourt, Calabar, and Ibadan in Nigeria; London and Edinburgh in the United Kingdom; Atlanta and New York in America; and other key African cities like Nairobi, Accra, Johannesburg and more.

Founded in 2013, NECLive has provided a sustained platform for conversations and interventions for an industry that has fought against all odds to survive and thrive.

The annual conference has hosted 11 events that have seen over 100,000 participants, reaching an audience of over 100 million in more than 30 countries with over 40 broadcast hours. NECLive has had over 100 partners and sponsors and brokered more than 700 deals.

NECLive will now present on an ongoing basis, a global showcase of the African entertainment experience – for the benefit of platforms, labels, investors, brands, businesses, talents, governments, and other stakeholders.

Ayeni adds: “The industry – even the whole world – has changed a lot since we kicked off NECLive in 2013 and having realised that most of the frustrations that led us to found NECLive have since been solved, I believe it’s now time to face newer, bigger battles. We wanted some standardisation around distribution, now we have it. We wanted access to bigger markets and opportunities to monetise and it’s already happening. We wanted honour and recognition and acknowledgment. It’s happening. It’s still early days but it’s already happening. But what does it mean? Where’s it headed? How do we benefit individually and collectively sustainably? What happens next?

We are spending the next 10 years of NECLive on answering these questions and more. And to do that well, we have to overhaul the entire format. So starting April 24, 2004, we will decentralise the platform, hosting shows and workshops and exhibitions and more all over the world. We will retain flagship events in Lagos and other Nigerian cities. But no matter where you are in the world, the plan is for you to be able to witness the African entertainment experience from the point of view of carefully selected professionals who have given and continue to give everything it takes to build what I am convinced will shape up to be the most successful creative industry in the world.”

NECLive will now be presented annually by Africa Creative Foundation, an invite-only membership-based organisation to be launched this summer.

#NECLive9 To Discuss Roles Of Creatives And Entertainment Industry In Nation Building As Nigeria Prepares For 2023 Elections

NECLive

As Nigeria prepares for the 2023 general election, NECLive, one of Africa’s biggest and longest-running gatherings of entertainment and creative industry professionals, will be discussing how the creatives and entertainment industry can be a vehicle for driving social change in Africa.

ID Africa, a leading communications advisory and media company, announced on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, that the ninth edition of the annual entertainment conference will be held on Friday, April 29, 2022, in Lagos, Nigeria.

According to ID Africa, this year’s edition of NECLive will return in-person for the first time in three years as a hybrid event.

Themed “Sustaining The Africa Momentum”, NECLive9 will delve into the role of creatives and the entertainment industry in nation-building in light of Nigeria’s upcoming 2023 general elections.

“In the past two years, we’ve seen how powerful entertainment and pop culture can be in influencing social change and driving narratives,” NECLive Convener Ayeni Adekunle said. “NECLive has been at the forefront of conversations around moving the entertainment industry forward and maximising its potentials; and for the ninth instalment, we’re continuing with this mission by engaging relevant stakeholders in discussions that will set the tone for the future of not just the industry but our continent as a whole.”

While Nigeria prepares for its next general election, which the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said would hold in March 2023, in other parts of the continent, military coups leading to the forceful takeover of government are on the rise. The year 2022 has already recorded a military coup in Burkina Faso and another failed coup attempt in Guinea Bissau.

Ahead of Nigeria’s election in 2023, more than seven presidential aspirants have declared interest to succeed Muhammadu Buhari, whose eight years tenure as President expires in May 2023.

In an election where dwindling economy, insecurity, mistrust for older politicians, rising unemployment and the 2020 EndSARS protests will dominate conversation, the Nigerian creatives and entertainment industry are taking it upon themselves to use their influence to get the young population actively involved in political activities ahead of the 2023 elections.

Nigerian music acts like Falz, Davido, Wizkid, DJ Switch, comedian Debo ‘Mr Macaroni’ Adebayo, among many others, who were at the forefront of the EndSARS protests in 2020, have been leading advocacy to mobilise young Nigerians to actively participate in the 2023 general elections.

Past election statistics show that many young Nigerians who are eligible voters are not registered voters, while those with Permanent Voters Card (PVC) do not show up to vote on election days. In the 2019 general election, only 28.6 million people voted out of 84 million registered voters.

However, the level of political orientation among young Nigerians increased significantly after the EndSARS protests in October 2020, and it is expected to keep rising with the involvement of entertainers in the advocacy. A Neusroom survey, polling 7,000 young Nigerians, conducted shortly after the protests in November 2020, revealed that they now have a strong mistrust for older politicians and want young people to assume the position of leadership.

As young Nigerians become increasingly interested in politics and the kind of leaders elected to run the nation from 2023, Femi Falodun, CEO, ID Africa, said, “Creativity, pop culture, technology and youthful energy are some of the most powerful forces that can create meaningful social and economic change in Africa today and tomorrow.”

According to him, this is why NECLive will be bringing together key industry players from across Africa to explore how entertainment can be used as a vehicle for driving social change on the continent.

Why NECLive9 Is Leading Conversation On How To Sustain The Africa Momentum – Femi Falodun, ID Africa CEO

Femi Falodun, CEO of ID Africa, a leading communications advisory and media company, has explained why the ninth edition of the annual entertainment conference, NECLive, will lead conversations on sustaining the African momentum.

ID Africa, on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, announced Friday, April 29, 2022, as the date for this year’s edition of NECLive, one of Africa’s biggest and longest-running gatherings of entertainment and creative industry professionals.

Themed “Sustaining The Africa Momentum”, NECLive9 will explore how African creatives and entertainers can use digital media and technology tools to build sustainable economic power for themselves, the industry, and their nations. The event will curate conversations and discussions focused on the cross-border opportunities available to Africa’s entertainment industry through the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) when it becomes fully operational, as well as global opportunities available within diaspora communities.

For the first time in three years, the conference returns in-person as a hybrid event after COVID-19 shuttered the world in 2020. For the 2022 edition, the conference will blend an in-person event featuring a select number of guests with online participants and a live global broadcast across cable TV, radio and online. The creative and entertainment industry platform, which was founded in 2013, will feature a multinational roster of speakers, panelists and performers interacting with a live audience from around the world.

Falodun said NECLive9 is bringing together key industry players from across the continent for a much-needed conversation on how to sustain the Africa momentum because “Creativity, pop culture, technology and youthful energy are some of the most powerful forces that can create meaningful social and economic change in Africa today and tomorrow.”

He added that “The true potential of Africa’s creative sector will be fully unlocked when practitioners have acquired the necessary skills and tapped into the growing global interest in the unique African offering. This is why NECLive9 is bringing together key industry players from across the continent for a much-needed conversation on how to sustain the Africa momentum.”

The conference will feature live performances by entertainers from across Africa and will also include product unveilings, brand announcements and industry tributes. It will be held in-person in Lagos and simultaneously broadcast live across the world on DStv and the NECLive website.

How To Stand Out In A Saturated Entertainment Industry

Now more than ever, the need to stand out in any career field has become more pertinent. Thanks to technology and communication, the entertainment space is now global. No matter the form of content you are looking for, you will find it in droves.

Is it music? As many genres and styles of music exist, there are many more artistes exploring and performing songs from each genre. As many movie genres exist, filmmakers are making them. When you decide to start a career in entertainment, you meet a saturated space that is not wanting for more content. And the truth of the matter is that there is no new content.

When singer, Rema, came to the scene, he wasn’t the only artist making music. Still, in a short while, he has managed to capture the Nigerian community’s attention and the international as well. When he debuted in 2019, he topped several charts in Nigeria at the end of the year. His song, Iron Man, was included on former US President Barack Obama’s summer playlist.

Instagram comedian,Taooma, started putting out her skits because she was trying to learn how to edit videos. She released her breakout video, ‘When your mum takes you to school,’ in 2019 and is consistent with her content. Today, she has over 1.7 million followers on Instagram and, according to Plaqad, earns up to one million Naira ($2500) per sponsored post on her Instagram page.

The conversation of achieving success in the entertainment industry has been a constant discussion point with young talent. Thankfully, the Nigerian Entertainment Conference is a place that has hosted several of these conversations over the years. Many industry professionals have touched on various points, and here are some of them.

Be Original

A lot of people underestimate originality. There is a lot of content out there, but you are what makes the difference. No two people are the same, and your content will reflect that, so be true to yourself. At NECLive 6, singer Simi said, ‘If you can be as original as possible as an artiste, there is a crowd that you will draw to yourself. Not because you’re trying to impress but because someone somewhere is connecting to your truth.’ So stay true to yourself and forgo the pressure of copying someone else’s style.

Know Your Audience

When you know who you want to make content for, it changes how you approach content creation.

At NECLive4, Singer Banky W says, ‘You need to understand the market around you enough to say maybe I need to take some things that these people connect into and incorporate that into some of the things you do.’ Understanding who you want to consume your content allows you to create in a way and language that they can understand

Have Clear Goals

Many people go into the entertainment industry with no clear goals or plan. Thus, there is no consistency in their work, nor is the drive to stand out. Visions of money, cars and fame can only take you so far. It is not sustainable.

‘If you want to succeed in the music industry, dive into it for only one reason, for the love of it’, veteran comedian Basketmouth says at NECLive4.

Consistency Is Key

No one ever made one song or carved one artistic piece and expected that alone to be the measure of their work. Same way, in school, to prove your intellect, you take several tests. If you want to stand out, be consistent. When people come to depend on you for a specific thing, you become the template for others.

Be Discoverable

At NECLive6, media personality Frank Edoho said, ‘Nobody can market your content for you. You need to be consistent with distributing your talent on social media. All you have to do to be discoverable is to expose yourself.’ The only way people will see you is if you put yourself out there. And it’s not enough to dump what you create, be deliberate about how you put it out.

The next edition of the Nigerian Entertainment Conference returns this Sunday, April 25, 2021. This year, #NECLive8 will be a hybrid media event combining a studio set-up of select speakers with live global broadcast across Cable TV, radio and online platforms. Some of Nigeria’s most brilliant professionals and accomplished entertainment industry stakeholders will explore the theme: ‘Building The Future’.

NECLive8: Big Cabal Media, Hip TV, 7even Interactive confirmed as Media and Creative Partners

In the runup to Sunday, April 25, 2021, ID Africa has confirmed Big Cabal Media, Hip TV and 7even Interactive as media and creative partners for the eighth edition of the Nigerian Entertainment Conference.

Big Cabal Media, an indigenous digital media company, creates super-engaging content that resonates with the African youth. With over 1.9 million page views per month, and over 130,000 subscribers to its newsletter, the publication develops original content such as The Couch, Naira Life, and Zikoko Elevator, among others.

HipTV is a Nigerian cable television channel, owned by creative entrepreneur, Ayo Animashaun, and a subsidiary of the media company Smooth Promotions. Launched in 2007, it was meant to be a broadcast platform for Animashaun’s iconic publication Hip Hop World Magazine, but has since grown into one of Nigeria’s biggest music and entertainment TV channels.

HipTV’s content is primarily focused on music videos, entertainment news, lifestyle programmes, and live broadcasts of entertainment events. It also has sole broadcasting rights to the Headies, Nigeria’s biggest music award show, organised by Smooth Promotions since 2006. With programmes like “Artistry Battle”,  “Crisp”, “Lyrics to Go”, “Top Notch” and “Trending”, HipTV has cemented its place as one of Africa’s major pop-culture platforms.

HipTV has supported the conference since its inception in 2013. In 2019, NECLive and HipTV set a new record for the channel’s longest uninterrupted live programme after broadcasting the conference for over nine hours.

7even Interactive is an award-winning marketing communications agency specialising in advertising, digital services, and media strategy implementation. It is reputed for building campaigns that resonate with consumers and helping them experience brands. Established in 2015, the agency deploys disruptive campaigns using a digitally-driven approach to shaping modern brands. In 2016, its “Tough Job” media campaign for Fidelity Bank bagged eight awards at the annual Lagos Advertising and Ideas Festival (LAIF). In 2017, it became the first agency in West Africa to be awarded in the “Digital & Interactive Communication: Social Media” category at the Loeries International advertising awards held in South Africa, for its “FrixionVodka” campaign – a CSR initiative against rape.

Femi Falodun, CEO, ID Africa, says he is delighted to partner with Big Cabal Media, 7even Interactive, and HipTV for NECLive8. In his words, “7even Interactive is one of the most creative firms in the Nigerian marketing communications space. And we are happy to work with them to develop the right messaging for the NECLive8 audience.

“Big Cabal and their properties, Zikoko and TechCabal are well plugged into pop culture and the tech business community that NECLive8 is trying to reach. They know the ecosystem and are well trusted across Africa.”

“NECLive8 is seeking to provide the tools, resources and connections that will further drive the change and innovation that the industry is yearning for. And HipTV is at the forefront of steering that change as well. We are glad to continue this 8-year-old partnership to build pathways for the future.”

As the largest gathering of entertainment industry professionals in Nigeria marks its eighth edition, participants will explore the theme “Building The Future.” How can entertainment be an instrument for change? What can aspiring talents look out for as they pursue their dreams? What doors have been opened by the triumph of Burna Boy and Wizkid at the Grammys? How has COVID-19 affected the sources through which Nigerian artists earn income, and what other ways of making money can indigenous entertainers contemplate? These questions, among others, will be addressed at NECLive8.

The event will be hybrid, combining a studio set-up with a live global broadcast. This edition will also feature live music, live drama, and comedy. At NECLive8, ID Africa plans to premiere the NECLive TV Special, a production that highlights the most memorable moments from previous NECLive editions.

Confirmed speakers for this year’s event include Nigerian comedians Bovi and Basketmouth; co-founder, Flutterwave and Andela, Iyin Aboyeji; Nollywood star, Dakore Egbuson-Akande; and founder of the Temple Management Company, Idris Olorunnimbe.

For over 7 years, NECLive has attracted more than 12,000 physical participants and 20 million viewers and audiences on television and digital. NECLive Releases Statement On Amendments To National Broadcasting Commission Code

The Nigerian Entertainment Conference (NECLive), Nigeria’s largest annual gathering of creative sector professionals is joining voices with entertainment and media industry stakeholders to condemn the recent amendments to the Sixth Edition of the NBC Code which was announced on May 27, 2020 by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

These amendments, which came without adequate consultations with industry stakeholders appear to make content exclusivity illegal in Nigeria. The new code also compels content sub-licensing, as it aims to forcefully regulate the prices at which content is sub-licensed by Pay TV operators and rights owners, regardless of whether they have recouped their investments or not.

In a statement signed by Henry Ekechukwu, the Conference Coordinator, the organizers expressed that they strongly believe that government policies such as this will end up discouraging investment in local content production especially sports and entertainment, and adversely impacting the wider media business – a profitable industry projected by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to be worth an estimate of 4 Trillion Naira by 2024.

Furthermore, the amended National Broadcasting Commission code will seriously hurt Nigeria’s economy, leading to job losses in the industry and loss of billions in taxes and other related fees levied by the Federal Government.

We hereby call on the National Broadcasting Commission and the Federal Government to reconsider, and reverse this decision. The focus at this time should be on creating policies that will empower as well as encourage the entertainment and media industry to exponentially thrive, thereby creating a favourable environment for the kind of economic growth that Nigeria desperately seeks.

COVID-19: Nigerian Entertainment Conference (NECLive8) Postponed

COVID-19 NECLive 8

Due to uncertainties surrounding COVID-19 and recent advisory from the Federal Government and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on public gatherings, ID Africa and the NECLive Organising Committee are announcing the indefinite postponement of the eighth edition of Nigerian Entertainment Conference (NECLive8), which was earlier scheduled to hold on Wednesday, April 22, 2020.

The recent outbreak of the Novel CoronaVirus (COVID-19) pandemic is challenging the world, including Nigeria with new cases detected over the past weeks. As a responsible organisation dedicated to the wellbeing of NECLive attendees and citizens of Nigeria, we believe this decision is in the best interest of everyone. We are thankful to our partners, sponsors, exhibitors and media friends who all through the years make necessary preparations to support NECLive in various ways.

For the first time in its eight-year history, NECLive, Nigeria’s largest annual gathering of entertainment and creative industry professionals will not hold in April. A new date for the full day conference and its associated satellite events will be announced in the coming weeks.

All attendees who have bought tickets are entitled to a full refund, while interested sponsors and partners can contact the Conference Coordinator on +234 803 788 1838 or [email protected] for further enquiries. The NECLive Organising Committee will continue to monitor national and global developments on the spread of Coronavirus. In the meantime, we empathise with those affected by COVID-19, both directly or indirectly and wish them speedy recovery.

We urge everyone to take precautionary measures by practising social distancing, washing hands with soap, using hand sanitizers often, maintaining good personal and environment hygiene, and to call 08000CORONA for advice or enquiries.

We look forward to having you join us at NECLive when a new date is announced.

ID Africa, owners of theNETng and producers of Nigerian Entertainment Conference (NECLive) have opened registration for the 8th edition of the long running conference which holds on Wednesday, April 22, 2020.

NECLive, which is the premier and largest gathering of entertainment industry professionals in Nigeria is expanding its format to accommodate new activities, events and programmes in order to deepen its impact and shore up its contributions to Nigeria’s entertainment and creative industry.

For the past seven years, NECLive has run as an intensive full day, nine-hour event featuring powerful panel sessions, insights from industry leaders and critically innovative conversations. However for 2020, a new programme format has now been introduced which features various events, activities and experiences over a three-day period.

Past editions of NECLive have seen over 12,000  attendees, reached over 60 million viewers online and via live TV, and hosted over 450 industry experts as speakers and panelists, including MI Abaga, 2Baba, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, Simi, Davido, Bayo Adekanmbi, D’Banj, among others.

Come Wednesday, April 22, 2020 the NECLive8 programme will be expanded into a three-day event featuring keynote speeches, panel discussions, training workshops and masterclasses, product exhibitions, an awards show, performances and multiple satellite events holding in venues around Lagos.

The theme for the event: “Building The Future”, explores various ways of maximizing the potential and impact of recent strides in distribution, cinemas, events, promotions, exhibitions, productions and festivals, and how stakeholders can erect the infrastructure necessary to build the desired future for Nigeria’s creative and entertainment industry.

With this new approach, #NECLive8 hopes to broach tougher conversations and nudge stakeholders towards extracting more value from the ecosystem than is currently obtainable. The expansion also allows for opportunities to introduce more experiential consumer activations and activities which will offer more value to attendees, creatives and brand partners.

The two-day programme will now incorporate the standard elements of NECLive alongside new elements such as an awards dinner designed to celebrate the best of Nigerian entertainment, and a concert which will feature performances from across the spectrum of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

“Since the 2019 edition of NECLive, we have been working hard behind the scenes to redesign the entire NECLive experience. Our goal is to offer more value to all attendees, our brand partners, entertainment industry professionals, performers and creatives in Nigeria, and we believe the 2020 edition will deliver this objective,” says Femi Falodun, ID Africa CEO.

Ayeni Adekunle, Founder and Convener of NECLive, also said, “We set up NECLive eight years ago as an intervention to rally everyone towards building the industry of our dreams.
